The Ogun State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles operating with covered, obscured, defaced, concealed, unauthorised, or missing registration number plates, in line with a directive of the Inspector-General of Police.
The Command explained that the exercise is part of renewed efforts to strengthen internal security, curb rising cases of vehicle-related crimes, and eliminate the anonymity often exploited by criminals using unidentifiable of.fake number plates.
According to the Police, the initiative will also enhance intelligence-led policing, improve surveillance capabilities, and support faster tracking of suspects involved in armed robbery, kidnapping, fraud-related mobility, and other criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, has ordered all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Team Commanders to strictly enforce the directive across the state. They are to impound all offending vehicles on sight and ensure thorough investigations are conducted in line with extant legal procedures.
The enforcement covers vehicles with fake, altered, improperly issued, or otherwise unauthorised registration plates, as well as those operating without any plate at all.
The Command further clarified that only vehicles officially exempted and duly authorised to display security or ceremonial flags in accordance with established protocols are excluded from the operation.
Motorists, commercial transport operators, ride-hailing drivers, logistics companies, and private vehicle owners have been strongly advised to immediately ensure compliance by fixing valid, government-issued, and clearly visible number plates on their vehicles.
The Police warned that defacing or intentionally covering number plates with tinted covers, dirt, reflective materials, or any other obstruction will attract enforcement action.
The Command noted that the operation is not designed to harass or inconvenience law-abiding citizens, but rather to restore order in vehicle identification systems and strengthen overall public safety architecture across Ogun State. It urged members of the public to cooperate fully with officers and to ensure all vehicle documentation remains valid and up to date.
To further enhance effectiveness, deployed officers have been directed to conduct the exercise professionally, respect human rights, avoid unnecessary confrontation, and operate strictly within the confines of the law.
Residents are also encouraged to support the Command by providing credible and timely information that could assist ongoing security operations in their communities.
