Okowa calls for excellence at Stars University ground breaking
Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has charged future students of Stars University, Idumuje-Ugboko to be ready to excel at the highest level as the institution is meant for only those who are of world class.
Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of the new institution, the governor who was represented by his Commissioner for Higher Education, Jude Sinebe said the name of the university which speaks volume as a citadel of champions should be the signpost for all those who aspire to seek admission into the institution once academic activities commence.
The governor praised the effort of Prince Ned Nwoko, a former House of Representatives member and currently a senatorial aspirant, for being the first Nigerian to establish a specialised sports university in the country and
Delta State being the first state to host such an institution.
One of Nigeria’s football icons, Mr. John Fashanu told journalists that he was extremely happy to witness the ground breaking ceremony of an institution close to his heart.
He said: “I would call today’s event unique because this is the first time in Africa, we would have a sports university solely for men and women who have the capacity to do something extra in sports. This is a blessed country and we have wonderful sportsmen and women, but no opportunities. So this university will give everybody a level playing field which is absolutely wonderful.”
The ex-international said he would be very disappointed if he does not have a role to play in the new university “because this is sports and I have two decades of playing football. As I said before, the potentials we have in this country are phenomenal which would never be fulfilled because we do not have enough sports universities. “
Chairman of the event Capt. Hosa Okubor commended the proprietor of the university, saying that just like himself, Nwoko has so much passion for his people. He emphasized the fact that Nwoko loved his people hence he chose to site the university at Idumuje Ugboko, which would bring a quicker development to the community.
According to him, Nwoko was not looking for what his people would do for him but what he would do for them adding that with the establishment of the university, which is a specialized one, he has succeeded in placing Idumuje Ugboko in the map of the world.
