Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has assured that his administration will continue to prioritise the welfare of civil servants and create a conducive environment for workers in the state to thrive.
Governor Okpebholo gave the assurance on Friday while receiving executives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State chapter, led by its Acting State Chairman, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide, at the Government House in Benin City.
The labour leaders were on a courtesy visit to congratulate the governor on his recent victory at the election petition tribunal, which upheld his election in the September 21, 2024 governorship poll.
The governor said his administration remained committed to workers’ welfare because it was a fundamental responsibility of government.
“Whatever we are doing that benefits Edo workers is not a favour but a responsibility. Edo people elected us to serve, and we are determined to make life better for everyone, especially our workers,” he said.
“We embrace transparency in all we do to build public trust. We are not afraid of criticism—constructive feedback only helps us do better for the people.”
He added that President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda had provided the platform and support needed for state governments to deliver tangible benefits to their people.
“We are committed to peace, unity, growth, and development across the state. We ensure smooth collaboration among the three tiers of government and carry all three senatorial districts along in our programmes,” he said.
In his remarks, Comrade Egwekhide commended Governor Okpebholo for what he described as landmark achievements and a worker-friendly environment.
He said the visit was to congratulate the governor on his deserved victory at the tribunal and to express appreciation for the administration’s support for workers.
“Edo workers are proud of you. You’ve consistently taken steps that show you value the workforce,” he said.
“Without asking, workers received their 13th-month salary. You increased the subvention to Ambrose Alli University (AAU) from N41 million to N500 million. You regularised the appointment of casual workers, and you increased the allocation for pensioners from N50 million to N1 billion monthly for both local and state retirees.”
Egwekhide also disclosed that a committee had been set up to review the compulsory pension scheme, which he said had become burdensome for many retirees. He noted that the report would soon be submitted for the governor’s consideration.
“We thank you for the numerous employment opportunities created within your short time in office,” he added.
