Okpebholo, Mark mourn late Godwin Abbey

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, and the former President of the Senate, David Mark, have expressed sadness over the passing of General Godwin Osagie Abbey, a legendary son of Edo state, who died on Saturday night in Abuja after a protracted illness.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor, Itua Fred, described the late Abbey as a revered military officer, administrator, and statesman.

According to Okpebholo, General Abbey’s life was a testament to discipline, dedication and service to the nation.

The statement reads:  “Born on January 10, 1949, General Abbe would have attained the milestone of 75 years on January 10, 2025. His illustrious career in the Nigerian Army was marked by numerous achievements.

“As a proud son of Edo State, General Abbe’s distinguished service to the nation is a source of inspiration and pride.

“His tenure as Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 1988 to 1990, and later as Minister of Defence and Internal Affairs, demonstrated his exceptional leadership qualities and commitment to the well-being of the Nigerian people.”

“Okpebholo extends his heartfelt condolences to the family of General Abbe, the good people of Edo State, and the entire nation.”

However, David Mark has described General Abbey’s passing as the fall of an Iroko, leaving a void that will be hard to fill.

In a heartfelt tribute through his media adviser, Paul Mumeh, the former Senate President hailed General Abbe as an uncommon patriot who served Nigeria with unwavering dedication both in uniform and in civil leadership roles.

“General Abbe was my comrade in arms, an epitome of integrity, discipline, and love for country. He was a great soldier and one of the leading lights in the Armed Forces of Nigeria. In every assignment he undertook, he demonstrated remarkable commitment, patriotism, and professionalism,” Mark said.

Mark recounted Abbe’s transformative impact as Military Governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, where he left “a legacy of accomplishments and indelible footprints.”
