Olubadan coronation: Upgraded Ibadan airport receives first flight

The upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan received its first flight on Wednesday, marking a key milestone ahead of the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

The aircraft, part of the presidential fleet, landed at 9:14 a.m., according to Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde. The reopening comes after the airport was closed in March 2023 for extensive renovation works.

Governor Makinde flagged off the upgrade in September 2024, with the project aimed at bringing the facility to international standards. The state government said the improvements included the expansion of the runway, installation of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing system, provision of a modern fire truck, and the refurbishment of the VIP lounge.

Officials explained that the project is expected to strengthen economic activity in Oyo State and improve air connectivity for passengers and businesses. Domestic operations are expected to resume fully in the coming weeks, while international services could begin in 2026, subject to regulatory clearance.

The airport reopening is also seen as crucial for logistics as the city prepares for the coronation of Oba Ladoja on Friday. President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremony, which will draw thousands of guests from within and outside Nigeria.

Commissioned in 1982, the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport has undergone several upgrades, but officials say this latest project is the most extensive in its history.
