Olugbenga Oyewole to lead charge in Infection Control at Lagos State General Hospital


Lagos State, Nigeria’s largest economy and a vibrant business hub, is not only known for its economic prowess but also for its top-tier medical services. Oyewole’s early career began in February 2000 as a Medical Officer at Shigun Hospital and Maternity in Ilupeju area of Lagos State, where he laid the foundation for what would become a remarkable professional trajectory.

His hard work and dedication quickly propelled him through the ranks. Oyewole’s rise to senior morbid histopathologist and later the Chief medical director at the Lagos State General Hospital, Marina confirms his expertise and leadership qualities. His reputation as one of the most respected medical officers in Lagos State is well-deserved, reflecting not only his clinical skills but also his commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for the community.

Oyewole served as a Consultant Pathologist with the Lagos State Government, after which he took on a prominent role at the Lagos State General Hospital. His contributions during this period have been significant, particularly as he became a Senior Pathology Consultant in 2015, further solidifying his influence in the medical field. He was a member of the disaster victim identification team of the Lagos State Government that was involved in the various disasters that occurred in the state including the DANA plane crash in 2012, Associate Airline Plane crash in 2013, Synagogue Building collapse in 2014, Bristol Helicopter crash in 2015, and the recent Lekki Gardens Building collapse that has killed at least 34 people.

Oyewole’s expertise and leadership have led to his recent appointment as the Chairman of the 11-member Infection Control Committee for the Lagos State General Hospital. This critical position is vital for maintaining public health standards, especially in a populous state where the risk of infectious diseases is heightened.

The committee, comprising esteemed professionals from various medical departments embodies a collaborative approach to tackling infection control in Lagos State and consequently in Nigeria.

Under his leadership, the committee is expected to develop and implement robust infection control policies, ensuring the safety and well-being of patients across Lagos State’s healthcare facilities. His deep understanding of pathology and proactive approach to public health challenges are invaluable assets in this role. As the chair of this committee, Oyewole is positioned at the forefront of efforts to combat infectious diseases, a pressing concern for health authorities worldwide.

In his remark, Oyewole appreciates the Chief Executive Officer/ Medical director of the Lagos State Government Hospital, Marina for the opportunity to serve, and he promised that the team “full of experts and experienced medical professionals will try its best to carry out the task that the people and government have committed in its hands”. He also urges members of the committee to support the committee in ensuring that the Lagos State General Hospital achieves its goals.
