
One person was yesterday declared dead, while four others sustained injuries in a road crash at Ihiala Local Council Secretariat, along Ihialla-Owerri road in Anambra State.
An eyewitness said the accident involved a white Zhongtong luxury bus marked NNE423XB and another vehicle whose details were unknown.
According to the eyewitness, the accident was as a result of fatigue and loss of control by the luxury bus driver, which hit the rear side of the other vehicle in front.
The acting Sector Public Education Officer of FRSC, Margaret Onabe, who confirmed the accident, in a statement, yesterday, said: “A fatal road traffic crash occurred at Ihiala Local Council by Ihiala-Owerri road on May 31, at about 05:00hours.
“The crash involved 22 people comprising 17 males and five female adults. Four male adults were injured and one male adult (the conductor) died.
“The crash was between two vehicles, an unidentified driver of a white Zhongtong luxury bus with registration number: NNE423XB, the other vehicle details were not obtained. The cause of the fatal crash was attributed to fatigue and loss of control.
“An eyewitness, one of the passengers, said the driver was tired and slept off, while driving, lost control and hit a vehicle in his front and crashed. However, the vehicle in front did not stop.
“At the time of filing this report, the injured victims were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital Ihiala and the dead victim deposited at the same hospital morgue by FRSC rescue team from RS5.34 Ihiala Unit Command. The personnel managed the traffic and ensured that obstruction was cleared.”
Confirming the incident yesterday, Sector Commander, Anambra State Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Adeoye Irelewuyi, said the crash occurred at about 05:00 hours.
While sympathising with families of the victims, Irelewuyi wished those injured a quick recovery. He also urged drivers to ensure they observe the regulatory rest period before plying the road, while traffic rules and regulations must be obeyed always.
