Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations

Prominent Nigerian leaders, including the Ooni of Ife, the Senate President, the Ogun State Governor and the Olu of Warri, have applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

They described the appointment as timely, strategic and well-deserved, praising the President for what they called a thoughtful choice capable of strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement on the global stage.
In a message to the lawmaker, the Arole Oodua and Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, said Ibrahim possesses the intellectual depth and global exposure required for the position.

The monarch noted that the senator, a doctorate holder from the University of Cambridge with degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Oxford, is “a man of quality and substance”.
According to the Ooni, Ibrahim’s extensive experience in diplomacy and legislative leadership makes him well suited for the role.

He also commended President Tinubu for selecting what he described as “a descendant of Oduduwa worthy of such a prestigious and strategic appointment.”
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for appointing Ibrahim to the United Nations, describing the move as recognition of the senator’s long-standing commitment to national service.

Akpabio said the appointment was “a well-deserved recognition of Ibrahim’s dedication, experience and commitment to national service.”
He added that Ibrahim’s “wealth of legislative and diplomatic experience makes him exceptionally suited for the role.”

The Senate President further stated that the entire 10th Senate would remain grateful to the President for the honour extended to their colleague.
According to him, “the entire 10th Senate will continue to be grateful to President Tinubu for the honour,” noting that such decisions highlight the importance of institutional knowledge in public service.

Akpabio emphasised that “appointments of this nature reinforce the importance of experience, institutional knowledge and dedication in advancing Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.”
He wished the senator success in his diplomatic assignment and pledged the support of the National Assembly for his work at the United Nations.

Similarly, the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, described the appointment as recognition of Ibrahim’s distinguished record in public service, business and governance.
Abiodun expressed confidence that the senator would represent Nigeria effectively in the international arena.

The governor stated that Ibrahim’s “extensive experience, intellectual depth and understanding of international affairs position him to represent Nigeria effectively at the United Nations and advance the country’s role in global diplomacy.”
Also congratulating the new envoy, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, said Ibrahim’s selection reflected the high regard in which he is held both nationally and internationally.

In a letter to the senator, the monarch noted that although Ibrahim was already serving in the National Assembly, he had been singled out for a higher diplomatic responsibility.
The Olu said the appointment “reflects Ibrahim’s reputation, integrity and institutional memory on the global stage.”

Meanwhile, the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Tulia Ackson, also congratulated Ibrahim, recalling his previous engagement with the global parliamentary body.
Ackson referred to his brief tenure as Interim President of the IPU in 2023 and praised his readiness to assume the new diplomatic responsibility.

She expressed confidence that his experience within the international parliamentary system would be valuable in representing Nigeria at the United Nations.
Other Nigerians from diverse backgrounds also commended President Tinubu for what they described as putting “the peg in the right hole.”

They noted that over the years Ibrahim had built an extensive international diplomatic network which could be deployed to advance Nigeria’s interests globally.
The commendations followed the announcement of Ibrahim’s appointment as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, a position widely regarded as one of the country’s most strategic diplomatic postings.
