Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State and his Nassarawa State counterpart, Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, are billed to meet at Agatu Local Government Area of the state to strengthen measures on how to end incessant Fulani herdsmen’s attack on the community and the prevention of reprisal attacks.

Ortom, who made the disclosure yesterday during a state security council meeting with Agatu people at Obagaji, headquarters of the local government, explained that they had already resolved on the visit during a joint Security Council meeting of the two states before the last crisis erupted.

Ortom stated that the dialogue of all stakeholders was needed to sustain peace in Agatu, and maintained that ranching remained the permanent solution to the perennial clashes between farmers and herders. He, however, noted that since it was a long-term measure, dialogue remained the only way to achieve peaceful coexistence.

He called on youths in the area that are still in possession of illegal arms and were using them for criminal activities to surrender them or face arrest and prosecution. He noted that the police and soldiers drafted to the area are to secure it since there were no bases for any self help by any group.
