Ortom tasks citizens on patriotism

Oyo speaker harps on tolerance, unity
Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has urged Nigerians to sustain their faith in the unity and capacity of the country to overcome its current challenges.Ortom, in an Independence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, maintained that by so doing, the country would realise its full potential as a nation.

According to the governor, the grace of God has steered Nigeria out of threats to its corporate existence, stressing that the people need to draw closer to God in their words and actions.

“Only sustained synergy between the Federal Government and states, as well as other stakeholders, can lead to victory over terrorism and other criminal acts in parts of the country,” he noted.Ortom reaffirmed the commitment of the Benue government to address youth restiveness by developing the agriculture value chain to engage young people in rewarding ventures.

Similarly, the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, has identified political, religious and tribal sentiments as the bane of the country’s development since Independence 59 years ago.Ogundoyin said this in his Independence message to Nigerians yesterday. He noted that the country remained socially, politically and economically underdeveloped because the leaders and citizens were polarised along political, ethnic and religious lines.

While calling for the spirit of patriotism, love, selflessness and brotherhood among Nigerians, the speaker expressed optimism that the country, with its human and material resources, could still lead the continent. He challenged citizens to build on the legacies of the nation’s founding fathers, stressing that Nigeria got her independence through a collective struggle.

“We need to see ourselves as one big family and look beyond political, tribal and religious affiliations, as no nation can develop if its citizens are intolerant of one another and are enmeshed in extreme bigotry,” the speaker said.

He lauded the resilience of Nigerians, especially in the face of myriad challenges, and stressed that every developed nation across the globe had at one time, in her journey to stability and prosperity, experienced difficulties.
