Oshiomhole, Aniuno, commonwealth doctors grieve

Eminent Nigerians, including Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole and seasoned football administrator, Olisa Aniuno yesterday mourned the passage of the defunct New Nigerian Bank (NNB) star defender.Also to commiserate yesterday with the family were the Commonwealth doctors.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Peter Okhiria, the governor described the late Eagle as a thoroughbred professional, complete gentleman, a good citizen who impacted positively on his immediate environment where he lived a quiet life.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Edo State, I join millions of Nigerians and other sports lovers worldwide to condole with my brother, the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, on the sudden death of this illustrious son of the state.

“He was a thoroughbred professional, a complete gentleman and a good citizen of Edo State where he lived quietly and peaceably with his neighbours before he gave in to the cold hands of death,” Oshiohmole said.

To Aniuno, the nation has lost a football hero and legend that spent his entire life for the development of the sport in Nigeria, adding that he was a great gift to the world.

“His death is a lesson for us all because after death which awaits everybody, only legacy lives on, so let us celebrate our own just like other countries do.

“Keshi was Nigeria’s gift to the world, a worthy ambassador who set good examples, very dignified and action-driven. It is sad that good people die young,” he added.

According to the Vice President, Commonwealth Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele in a statement yesterday in Benin City, “one has been so devastated and unable to hold back tears since learning of the untimely death of our indisputable football icon, the inimitable Coach Stephen Okechukwu Keshi.

“As one with whom I had privileged and great friendship from my tender age, I feel extremely sad, especially as Coach Stephen Keshi lost his wife only a couple of months ago. He was undoubtedly a true patriot, committed, diligent, selfless and altruistic Nigerian, iconic coach and a well-respected global citizen who made tremendous sacrifices to his country, Nigeria, and the global community at large.

“Despite the challenging circumstances, he sometimes found himself, he, at all times, exemplified the “I can do” Nigerian spirit, one that made him achieve astounding results in his chosen career.

“I offer my sincere and deep condolences to his immediate family, particularly the children he left behind, his extended family, the Aburimes (including my dear friend and in-law to late Coach Stephen Keshi, Patriot Richard Aburime). I also commiserate with the Federal Government of Nigeria as well as the governments and people of Edo and Delta states, the Nigerian Football Federation, and indeed all Nigerians, over Coach Stephen Keshi’s shocking and untimely demise,” he said.
