Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who currently plays for Serie A champions Napoli, will undoubtedly be of significant interest to all the world’s top clubs this summer after a prolific goalscoring campaign. But, with interest reported from Premier League outfits such as Manchester United, any potential move to England could be blocked due to his price tag.
Osimhen, 24, has been in great goalscoring form all season, hitting a stunning twenty-eight goals from thirty-five games in all competitions. And the Nigerian’s goalscoring exploits have been crucial in helping his current employers Napoli win their first Serie A title since 1989/90, which has made the best teams in Europe, including Manchester United, stand up and take notice because they know with him in their starting XI, EPL match betting would swing in their favour in a big way.
But, the current stumbling block in the case of Manchester United, according to reports, is that it’s believed it would cost in excess of £100 million to prise Osimhen away from Napoli, and the current owners are not willing to go to that level at present, a situation that could change if a takeover goes through. In addition, a reason offered up as to why stretching to meet the demands is potentially off the cards right now is the striker’s injury record, with Osimhen prone to picking up muscle complaints.
United are in the market for what is being described as an elite striker and a proven goal-getter, and Osimhen certainly fits the billing. And he has fired his team to Serie A success. But, the price tag, coupled with his proneness to pick up muscle injuries and his lack of Premier League experience, could all work against him, in the case of Manchester United, anyway.
One club from the Premier League that could take the plunge is Chelsea. Under their new ownership, they have not been scared of spending big money when required, and it’s highly unlikely that his price tag of over £100 million will put them off when they will be offloading players this summer. Romelu Lukaku, Christian Pulisic and others could be sold, and the funds reinvested to make the deal happen, or they could even be offered as makeweights to get it over the line if Napoli are interested.
So at this stage, if any Premier League outfit are going to acquire the services of the Nigerian, who has scored fifteen in twenty-three for his country, it will be Chelsea, a club that needs a striker and one that can financially make things happen. For Manchester United, their manager Erik ten Hag is likely to pursue Spurs striker Harry Kane, who is believed to be his number one target. Kane ticks a lot of boxes, and unless something drastically changes at Tottenham, it’s hard to see him staying when he’s twenty-nine and still has time to go on and challenge for league titles elsewhere.
