Osoba declares journalism as greatest profession

Former Ogun state governor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, has praised journalism as the greatest profession in the world, stating its vital role in nation-building.

He made the remarks at a World Photography Day event held in Lekki, Lagos, where he celebrated the enduring relevance of photojournalists despite the challenges posed by the internet.

“Your products are undisputed, unopposed and undefeated,” Osoba said, commending the PhotoJournalists Association of Nigeria (PJAN) for organising the event. He pledged his full support to the association, promising to “be there for you and whatever you want me to do for you, I will do it in totality.”

The event, themed: “My Favorite Photos,” was sponsored by the DAP Foundation.

The foundation’s chairman, Mr Dayo Adedayo, who also served as the event’s chairman, echoed Osoba’s sentiments. He described photography as “memory, truth and power,” adding that a story without a photograph is “boring.” Adedayo, who is building a digital center for documentary and photography, encouraged photographers to do more research and documentation, assuring them that photography is a “lucrative profession.”

In her welcome address, PJAN chairperson, Princess Alaba Igbarola, called on the government and other stakeholders to engage professional photographers and support their efforts to document and preserve Nigeria’s national journey.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos state Council, urged photojournalists to uphold the ethics of their profession and resist manipulation in the digital era. He also advised them to combine photography with writing to remain relevant in the field.
