The Osun State government, on Sunday alerted security agencies over fresh plots by some individuals to unleash violence in local government areas and motor parks across the state.
A statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, urged the security agencies to do the needful in checkmating any attempt to plunge Osun into another orgy of violence.
It is recalled that there had been protracted legal tussles over leadership of councils between the All Progressives Congress (APC) local chairmen elected during the twilight of the immediate past administration of ex-Governor Gboyega Oyetola in 2022 and council bosses elected during February 22, 2025 poll conducted by Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.
However, Alimi hinted that some unscrupulous individuals were planning to forcefully take over local government secretariats and motor parks in defiance to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He contended that time had come for post-election reconciliation and peace-building considering victims affected by violence which rocked the state few days before August 15 gubernatorial poll.
According to the statement, government noted the immediate post- election disruptions in some areas of the state and urged all residents and citizens of the state to allow restoration of peaceful co- existence and rule based interactions among all sectors of the society.
It reads, “The government is particularly disturbed by reports of plans by some stakeholders to ignite fresh rounds of crisis across local government councils and motor parks across the state.
“This plan, if true, should stop immediately in the interest of public peace. Osun needs peace for development, not violence in politics.
“The Osun election has been won and lost. Mr President and Mr Governor had engaged on a peaceful way forward. Any push towards violence represents an affront on the Presidency and the Nigerian constitution.
“The government calls on security agencies to enforce return to rule of law by ensuring release of political detainees and an end to perceived partisan policing especially on local government and motor park management.
“We call on all political actors to speak and act peacefully. Osun should be in a period of healing and building. We must not allow a relapse into the pre-election era of killings and violence, “the statement concluded.
