Over 800 students in Lagos Lagoon communities get educational, health support
More than 800 primary and secondary school students in the Lagos Lagoon communities of Saga, Ejirin, and Oriba in Epe have received textbooks and educational supplies in a project to support climate-impacted rural areas.
The initiative, ‘Lagos Lagoon Climate Response—Support for Rural Communities,’ is organised by Help Africa Initiatives (HAI) in partnership with Eyes of a Lagos Boy, Healthinika, Mitimeth, Ecolearn.ng, Lagos State Waterways Authorities (LASWA), and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Students received textbooks covering Basic Science, Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Civic Education, and Biology.
The Elejirin of Ejirin, Oba RafiuIshola Balogun, encouraged students at LofiOgunmude Comprehensive College to stay committed to their education. A medical team led by Dr TuyiMebawondu conducted health checks, provided medicines, and educated villagers on disease prevention, particularly for pregnant women. So far, over 1,000 residents have benefited from health services, and referrals for additional support have been provided.
The project, which runs until March 2025, includes monthly visits and educational assemblies to raise awareness on climate change, critical thinking, and creative writing. Training on converting seaweed into valuable products has also begun, aiming to foster economic opportunities for these communities.
Project Coordinator Bolaji Alonge noted, “We are addressing these communities’ pressing concerns together as partners.” Representing the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sanne Chipeta expressed gratitude to all involved and emphasised the need for long-term solutions to improve living conditions and resilience. An exhibition showcasing the project’s impact in Epe’s coastal villages is planned for April 2025.
