Residents of communities along the Ijoko-Oyero-Lisa axis in Ifo Local Council of Ogun State have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the reconstruction of the 10.5-kilometre road serving their communities and providing access to the Lisa Memorial Arcade.
The residents made the appeal during a peaceful walk held yesterday, drawing participants from more than 40 communities along the corridor.
They said the deplorable condition of the road had become a major burden on residents, motorists, businesses and other road users.
The organisers stressed that the exercise was not a protest against the government, but an appeal intended to draw attention to the hardship being experienced by communities along the corridor.
They said that the condition of the road had increased transportation costs, affected commercial activities and placed additional pressure on residents whose daily activities require movement in and out of the communities.
The Onilisa of Lisa Kingdom, Oba Nojeemdeen Oladele Odugbemi, while reacting to the peace walk, expressed satisfaction that the communities chose peaceful engagement to communicate their concerns to the authorities.
Oba Odugbemi appealed particularly to the Ogun State Government to consider rehabilitating the dilapidated road, stressing that improved access from Ijoko through Oyero to Lisa would stimulate economic activities and improve the quality of life in the affected communities.
He also called for the rehabilitation of the Lisa Memorial Arcade, describing it as an important national site that should be preserved and made easily accessible.
Also speaking, the Baale of Arugudu, Akeem Kolawole, said the communities were approaching the government in the spirit of cooperation and development rather than confrontation.
Kolawole said residents understood that government had several competing responsibilities and development projects requiring attention, but appealed to the authorities not to overlook communities whose economic and social activities were being constrained by poor infrastructure.
