The Oyo State Government has commemorated the 2025 World Breast Cancer Day with the launch of a comprehensive free cancer screening exercise for residents across the state.
The event brought together health professionals, government officials, and members of the public to highlight the importance of early detection, regular screening, and prevention in combating breast cancer.
Speaking at the event, the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Femi Adesanya, expressed appreciation to the Oyo State First Lady and the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, for their consistent support of health initiatives aimed at saving lives.
“Every October is Pink Month, a time dedicated not just to celebration but to raising awareness about prevention and early detection of breast cancer. Many women lose their lives to cancer every year, yet early detection can save those lives. I urge everyone to take advantage of the free screenings offered by our expert practitioners today,” Dr. Adesanya said.
The programme also featured a health education session delivered by Mrs. Adeoye, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, titled “Health Education on Breast Cancer and Self-Breast Examination.”
She outlined the causes, warning signs, and preventive measures of breast cancer, emphasising that “Breast cancer is a serious but highly treatable disease when caught early. Together, we can reduce its impact on our communities.”
Representing the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Folashade Adeniji of the Non-Communicable Diseases Department urged women to act promptly if they notice any unusual changes in their breasts.
“If you see redness, swelling, or any abnormal signs, please consult a healthcare professional immediately,” she advised.
The Ministry of Health partnered with the Oyekan Oyenike Foundation for the event, which reflected the 2025 World Breast Cancer Day theme, “United by Unique.”
Inspired by the World Health Organization’s message, “Every Story is Unique,” the theme celebrates the individual journeys of breast cancer survivors while underscoring the importance of awareness, screening, and community support.
The Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to advancing cancer education and awareness through continued collaboration with the Oyo State Government.
Tosin Ishola also expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde, the Ministry of Public Health, and the Department of Non-Communicable Diseases for their dedication to improving public health outcomes in the state.
The free cancer screening exercise was officially flagged off by Dr. Adesanya, enabling hundreds of residents to benefit from early detection services.
The initiative reinforces the government’s commitment to reducing cancer-related deaths through timely intervention, continuous sensitisation, and improved healthcare access.
