About 222 individuals lost their lives, while 779 others sustained injuries in 304 road crashes across 33 Local Councils of Oyo State in 2024. Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Rosemary Alo, who disclosed this in a statement yesterday, said a comparative analysis of the crashes showed a decline compared to the reported cases in 2023.

Alo acknowledged the efforts of the Command, which, she said, had resulted in the reduction of the rate of accidents on the road. She stressed the need for strict compliance with traffic rules.

The sector commander noted that despite efforts to sensitise the motoring public against dangerous driving, many motorists and other road users have yet to imbibe safety as a culture.

“As much as we continue to sensitise the public on the danger of reckless driving, overspeeding and driving with worn-out tyres are still the order of the day.

“These are the critical offences that have significantly contributed to the crashes. As much as we intensify our efforts to sensitise people to these dangers, we appeal to motorists and other road users to imbibe road culture.

“The positive attitude of the motorists and other road users will greatly reduce road crashes.

“If motorists and the public imbibe the road culture, the present rate of crashes will be reduced further. Hence, we are appealing to them to ensure that they adhere strictly to the various traffic rules,” she added.
