Workers at five tertiary educational institutions owned by the Oyo State Government have begun an indefinite strike over non-payment of minimum wage.

The Polytechnic, Ibadan, The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki, Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, and Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate are the affected institutions.

The workers, under the auspices of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), announced the commencement of the strike on Monday.

The strike is coming a few days after the commencement of the first-semester examination at The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

The entrance gates in those institutions have been shut.

JAC which comprises about 15 staff unions, noted that the strike became necessary to press home their demands from the state government.

“This decision was reached after extensive deliberations and consultations among the unions, following the inability of the management of the affected institutions to address the longstanding issues of non-implementation of the approved 25/35 per cent salary increase being enjoyed by our colleagues in other institutions since January 2024 and the new minimum wage for workers in the Polytechnic and College of education sector.”
