The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied destroying the billboards and campaign materials of rival political parties.
The denial came after the Olusola Oke Campaign Organisation accused it of destroying the campaign materials of the candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD).
The PDP’s Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Ayo Fadaka, said the allegation against its members was fraught with dishonesty.
“We view the political activities of opposition parties, including the AD, as being childish and clandestally-inclined to attract attention. Our members did not touch their campaign materials as alleged by them,” he said.
He said the PDP members were too refined and cultured to carry out the alleged desctruction, even at the height of provocation.
A statement by the AD’s state chairman, Seriki Adebobola, said the situation was unacceptable to it. He described it as the height of desperation by the agents of a sitting government.
Adebobola explained that it was unprofitable for the PDP to embark on a mass destruction of the election campaign posters and banners of an opposition party.
He added that the PDP members took the action few hours after the AD held a successful campaign in Akure, which attracted supporters from across the state.
The AD chairman said the plot was to paint a picture of insecurity in the state, to force the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the coming governorship election.
According to him, members of the AD would not dignify the action by retaliating, despite the obvious provocation against them.
“This provocation is uncalled for and the height of political intolerance. The AD is not in any way connected to the crises in the PDP and would not condone electoral violence in the election.”
He appealed to the state governor, Olusegun Mimiko to call his party members to order.
He also urged the security agencies to be on the alert to stop any further breach of public peace.
