The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) has raised concern over the state of governance in Nigeria, saying the country was fast drifting towards full-blown dictatorship amid worsening poverty and hunger in the midst of plenty.
The forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, in a statement on Friday signed by its Director-General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, said the disconnect between Nigerians and constituted authority had deepened, leaving the people disillusioned with leadership.
The statement, issued to mark this year’s Eid-el-Maulud celebration, extended warm felicitations to Muslims across Nigeria and the world, while urging reflection on the values of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
“Today, our country is at a crossroad as Nigerians get disconnected from the constituted services they deserve. As we inch daily to full-blown dictatorship with its attendant abuse of power and citizens live in abject penury in the face of plenty, leadership is once again called to urgently address insecurity, our compromised judicial system, failed economic policies resulting in intolerable hunger, poverty and unemployment,” the forum said.
The governors urged leaders at all levels to embrace values that inspire hope and rebuild trust in governance, stressing the need for “public service with accountability, kindness without expectation, humility, and the pursuit of truth.”
They described the Eid-el-Maulud as a gesture of peace and solidarity, noting that the Prophet’s life and teachings of compassion, tolerance, justice and unity remain a guiding light to humanity.
“Let this day be a reminder of the values we should uphold and share to rebuild the faith of our citizens in our country. May your celebrations be filled with joy, prayer, and meaningful connection with loved ones,” the statement added.
