Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has donated a total of ₦15 million to two educational institutions in Bauchi State: Malikiya College of Nursing Sciences and Intisharu Taufizul Quranic School.
The donation was made on Friday during Obi’s visit to the state. He presented ₦10 million to the nursing college and ₦5 million to the Quranic school.
While addressing students and staff at Malikiya College of Nursing Sciences, Obi stressed the importance of nurses in healthcare delivery and described health as a central indicator of national development.
“You are very important to society, you are very important to this country called Nigeria and if there is anything we can do to support what you are doing, we need to do it,” he said.
Obi stated that nurses play a central role in patient care and should be supported through improved infrastructure and training.
“Today, we know that the number one measure of success of any nation is health, and you can’t measure health without thinking of the human infrastructure. The nurse is important. The nurse knows the patient, the nurse owns the patient, the nurse is everything,” he added.
He also noted that he has visited and supported approximately 70 nursing institutions across the country in the last year as part of ongoing interventions in the health sector.
In separate remarks, the proprietors of both schools, Aminu Danmaliki and Alhaji Usman Abubakar, acknowledged the donations and pledged to apply the funds transparently to improve learning facilities and educational outcomes.
The visit and donations form part of Obi’s engagements with health and educational institutions since the conclusion of the 2023 general elections.
