Why Aba Electric was not affected by national grid collapse
In a display of resilience and commitment, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) has successfully maintained a consistent power supply to its premium customers despite facing two significant grid collapses within a week.
The firm’s Head Corporate Communications, Olubukola Ilevbare, in a statement yesterday, said this was made possible through the strategic bilateral supply arrangement with First Independent Power Limited (FIPL).
Ilevbare said during the recent challenges posed by grid instability, PHED’s proactive measures ensured that premium customers received uninterrupted electricity.
According to her, the bilateral agreement with FIPL played a crucial role in this process, allowing for a reliable source of power that mitigated the impacts of the grid failures.
Also, the nine local government areas (LGAs) in Abia State serviced by Aba Power were not affected by the latest national grid collapse that occurred at the weekend.
This is because Geometric Power Group, owner of Aba Power, Nigeria’s 12th electricity distribution firm, generates and distributes electricity to Aba without going through the national transmission network.`
The Aba Power Managing Director, Ugo Opiegbe, confirmed that Aba Power’s coverage area was not affected by the grid collapse. The collapse, which has been restored by TCN engineers, was the third in one week. It was ascribed to an explosion in the transmission network.
Also speaking on the development, an engineer, Ugwu Ejike, stated that “every off-grid project doesn’t have to be as big as the Aba Power project which cost about $800m, making it the largest investment in the Southeast”.
Ejike said Geometric Power is the only electricity firm with this model in the country, explaining that though the Sahara Energy Group has both the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company and the Egbin Power Plant in Ikorodu in Lagos, the power it generates is not dedicated to a particular area but sent to the national grid.
