Police accuse political parties of fuelling thuggery in Kano

Commissioner of Police in Kano, Salman Dogo, yesterday, accused political parties of orchestrating thuggery and killings in the state.

According to Dogo, unless the political actors stop blame games, it may be difficult to sustain enduring stability in the state.

The police boss was reacting during the end of year press briefing at the Bompai Command headquarters to a question on the security threat posed by thugs and other related criminals in Kano.

Dogo said the police strategic measures being deployed to check political thuggery include kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.

By kinetic measure, the CP said the police was not resting on its oars from deploying maximum force to arrest, detain and prosecute suspected political thugs.

He, however, expressed worry that while the command paraded the thugs, prosecuted and sent them to jail, the thugs would subsequently find their ways out of the prison and would continued to frustrate the relative peace.

“We are arresting, prosecuting and even jailed many of the thugs in Kano and that is the reason why you would have noticed the state continued to enjoy peace.

“But what we have noticed is that at the end of the day, those thugs were released from the prison. And that has been the reason for the resurgence of crisis in the state. However, we would not rest. Police would keep arresting and parading them.

“On the non-kinetic approach, the police have prevailed on all the political interest to call their members to order. But the problem cannot be solved as the politicians continue to play the blame game,” Dogo stated.

The police boss narrated how the command combated banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery attacks across 17 frontline local councils bordering Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Bauchi states in the outgoing year 2024.

He added that the command successful surmounted the security challenges after critical analysis and intelligence-led surveillance, visibility policing and synergy with sister security agencies.

The CP maintained that the success recorded on crime management in the outgoing year, under the leadership of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, practically accounted to reduction in crimes.
