Criminal handcuffed by Police

The police in Lagos have arraigned a land speculator, Ikem George Anagwu, before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court sitting in Igbosere, for alleged forgery.
Anagwu was arraigned, before Chief Magistrate Eniola Ogunkanmi, by operatives of Force Criminal Investigation Department (ForceCID) Annex Alagbon-Ikoyi, Lagos, on one-count charge of forgery.

The prosecuting counsel, Morufu Animashaun, told the court that the defendant sometimes in 2021, at Oko Ado Village, Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos, forged the signature of one Kingsley Ehikioya, on a document titled, ‘Deed of Assignment’.

He said the defendant fraudulently used the said Deed of Assignment between an Engineering firm, Nonskanin Engineering Limited, and Kingsley Ehikioya.

The prosecution noted that his offence contravened the provision of section 365(3)(e) of the Criminal Law Chapter C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State 2015, and punishable under the same law.

Anagwu denied the allegation and pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.
Following his plea, Animashaun urged the court to remand him in prison custody and fix a trial date.

However, the defendant’s counsel prayed the court to grant his client bail on the ground that the charge against him was bailable, and that he has credible sureties to stand for him.

The court therefore admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

The court also ordered that the sureties must be residing within the court’s jurisdiction and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State government.

The chief Magistrate adjourned the matter to September 29, for mention, and ordered that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) pending perfection of his bail condition.
