The State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Mustapha Bala, announced the arrests during a press briefing at the Command’s headquarters on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.

The suspects, identified as Blessing Akpelu, 20, Precious Ebee, 30, and Wisdom Oto Amadi, 28, all from Egbeda in Emohua Local Council, were reportedly behind a series of highway robberies and kidnappings.

The Commissioner noted that the suspects were known for setting up illegal roadblocks to ambush unsuspecting travellers. Bala revealed that the arrests followed a surge in kidnappings along the expressway, including the abduction of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and two others. He explained that the gang would target motorists at gunpoint, taking hostages for ransom.

The first two suspects, Akpelu and Ebee, were arrested on October 17, 2024, while Wisdom Amadi, identified as the gang leader, was apprehended at Egbeda on October 19, 2024.

In a separate operation, the police arrested Baridam Berebom, a notorious armed robber, recovering a stolen vehicle, firearms, and ammunition. Berebom was found in possession of an SMG rifle, which was reportedly used to rob an NYSC member.

Bala stated that intelligence gathering played a crucial role in tracking down the suspects, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang and recover more weapons.

He urged the public to assist the police by providing relevant information that could lead to further arrests. He assured residents that the Command remains committed to protecting lives and property, stressing that the suspects will face due process in court to ensure justice is served.

“We encourage the public to continue cooperating with the police by sharing timely and credible information. Together, we can make Rivers State safer for everyone,” Bala said.
