Police arrest man for allegedly impersonating Ayade

Ben Ayade

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly impersonating the state Governor, Ben Ayade. The state Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, disclosed this yesterday in Calabar, while clarifying issues surrounding the arrest.

According to him, the man, whose name was given as “Dr.” Peter Bushing claimed to be the governor’s aide and collected about N2million from two persons in Obudu with a promise to give them contracts.

He said the man was arrested after someone reported that he collected the money from two people, with a promise to give them contracts.“Right now, he is being detained in Afokang prison after the court had ordered his remand. He is not with the police, but we doubt if he truly works with the state government,” he said.

The Guardian learnt that Bushing was arrested with over 300 company profiles, which he used to convince his victims that he had the authority to award them the contracts.

According to the commissioner, the impersonator promised to give his victims contracts in the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the state Ministry of Health.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Christian Ita, clarified that the suspect was not a member of the state administration.“I don’t even know the person you are talking about, because he is not working in this administration. If you know how things work here, you would know that due process is always followed before any contract is awarded. The man is not known to this government,” he said.
