The Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed that a woman identified as Ifeoluwa Adekalu was accidentally shot dead by an officer.

The incident, according to a police statement, occurred in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Thursday, after an officer accidentally discharged a bullet from his gun at the Okela Police Station.

“The police officer, who was on a visit to the station, reportedly discharged the firearm in a moment of celebration after receiving the news of a colleague’s promotion,” the statement read.

“However, the bullet accidentally struck the woman, Ifeoluwa Adekalu, leading to her death.”

The mother of one was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but despite efforts to save her, she died as a result of injuries sustained from the gunshot.

The Ekiti State Police Commissioner, AIG Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the shooting and said that the officer responsible had been disarmed and detained.

Adeniran added that the unnamed officer will undergo interrogation in accordance with the Nigerian Police Act.
