The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously approved the appointment of Mr Olatunji Disu as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police.
The meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, was held at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja. It lasted less than 30 minutes before members unanimously decided in favour of Disu’s confirmation.
The approval is in line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Council to consider and advise on the appointment of an Inspector-General of Police by the President.
Chaired by the President, the Nigeria Police Council comprises the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police.
The body serves as a key advisory organ on policing policy, administration, and senior appointments.
Monday’s session followed the resignation of former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, last week. In announcing Egbetokun’s departure, the Presidency had indicated that the Council would be convened to formally consider Disu’s appointment.
Among those in attendance were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack.
Also present were the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos; Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun; Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa; Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau; Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo; and Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu.
The deputy governors of Kogi and Delta states were also in attendance, alongside the Ministers of the Federal Capital Territory, Police Affairs, and Interior.
Disu, 59, had been serving in an acting capacity since last Wednesday, following Egbetokun’s exit.
At his decoration ceremony last week, President Tinubu charged the new police chief to reposition the Nigeria Police Force at what he described as a critical moment in the country’s history.
“Today, we hand you the responsibility of leading the Nigeria Police Force at a critical time in our nation’s journey. You must lead with integrity, prioritise the welfare of your officers, and work tirelessly to restore confidence in the police as a force for good,” the President said.
A native of Lagos Island, Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University, as well as master’s degrees in Public Administration and in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology.
