Police detain Kano anti-graft boss for alleged forgery

Kano State Police Command has detained the suspended Chairman of Kano Anti-Corruption Commission, Muhuyi Rimin-Gado, for alleged forgery and false declaration.

His detention came few hours after the House of Assembly ordered the state government to sack, arrest and prosecute him due to several petitions against him.

At yesterday’s plenary, presided over by the Speaker, Hamisu Chidari, the lawmakers ordered his immediate sack and prosecution.

While the ad hoc committee set up to investigate Rimin-Gado was presenting the report to the House, the chairman of the committee, Umar Gama, explained that the 12-member committee had concluded its investigations and came out with five recommendations.

He said the recommendations include the immediate sack of the suspended chairman, his arrest and prosecution, and setting up an ad hoc committee to investigate the financial activities of the Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission from the year 2015 to date.

Speaking to journalists after the sitting, the Majority Leader of the House, Labaran Madari, said the joint committee set up by the House to investigate Rimin-Gado found out that the medical report his lawyer submitted was fake.

“Our committee recommended that the state’s civil service should take appropriate action on Isah Yusuf, a Level Four officer serving as an accountant at the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission.

“We also called on the accountant earlier rejected by Muhyi (Rimin-Gado) to assume duty as the new accountant in the commission,” he said.

Although the ad hoc committee only presented its recommendations before the plenary yesterday, The Guardian gathered that Rimin-Gado had received the police invitation for questioning since Saturday.

Confirming the detention, police spokesman in Kano, DSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, told The Guardian that Rimin-Gado was only invited for investigation.

Although he was not categorical whether the invitation was a result of the assembly’s recommendation, Kiyawa disclosed that the suspended anti-corruption chairman was responding to allegations of forgery and false declaration against him.

“He is with us answering questions. Of course, there is an investigation into the allegations of forgery and false declaration against him. He was actually invited and he came to the police headquarters on his own.”
