Lagos State Police command and the Force headquarters, Abuja have dismissed possible ‘foul play’ in the death of Osung Ekpo, an Assistant Commissioner of Police who drowned in a Lagos Hotel pool.

The command also dispelled speculations that it has sealed up the hotel where the senior officer died and arrested some persons.

According to spokesperson of the command, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of police (SP), “We don’t have any reason to seal up the hotel or arrest staff of the hotel because we did not suspect any foul play. The officers visits the pool often because he lives close to the place so everyone in that place knows him very well.”

Badmos who disclosed that plans are in top gear to give the senior officer a befitting burial also noted that a condolence register has been opened at the Area Command headquarters, Morogbo where he was serving before his untimely death.

“The burial of the officer is not a Lagos police command burial alone, he is a very senior officer, an Assistant Commissioner of police. The Nigeria Police Force headquarters is involved in the plans. Already, a condolence registers has been opened in his honour at the Area Command headquarters.”

Ekpo was the Area Commander, Area K Police Command, Morogbo, before he died mysteriously while swimming in an undisclosed hotel in the city, as he was celebrating the Valentine’s Day with some of his friends.

A police source had told The Guardian that the incident “was the worst valentine gift for the police.”

The Area Commander allegedly died in a swimming pool at a popular hotel in the Ajah area of Lagos during a hangout with some friends and got drowned. Some policemen who spoke to The Guardian at the command headquarters, GRA, Ikeja described Ekpo as ‘a jolly good fellow’.

“This officer we are talking about is a jolly good fellow. The command is mourning this indefatigable officer. He is loved by many good people and hated by criminals because he was a ‘no nonsense officer’. May his gallant soul rest in perfect peace.”

Many policemen have made Ekpo’s photograph their profile picture on their Facebook pages, WhatsApp and other social media platforms largely due to the love they had for him.
