Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged attempt by a man to remove his wife’s eyes while she was sleeping. The suspect, Mr Lawrence, an aluminium products businessman from Bende, has been arrested and is in police custody along with exhibits believed to have been used in the attack.
The victim, Mrs Amarachi Lawrence, is recovering at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia, according to hospital spokesperson Mr Darlington Madubuko.
Her neighbour and landlady, Mrs Lovejane Nwaiwu, who was injured while trying to protect Mrs Lawrence, has been treated and discharged.
The incident has drawn the attention of Abia State Governor’s wife, Priscilla Otti, who visited the victims in hospital and pledged to intensify efforts to curb gender-based violence in the state.
Police spokesperson ASP Maureen Chinaka confirmed the incident to The Guardian, stating that a thorough investigation is underway. Before the alleged attack, the couple had previously lived peacefully in Umueze, Umuahia North Council.
