Police parade legislator over attempt to burn INEC office in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has arrested a member of the state Assembly, Isyaku Ali Danja, over alleged attempt to burn down office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at Gezawa Council.

The Kano State Police Command has arrested a member of the state Assembly, Isyaku Ali Danja, over alleged attempt to burn down office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at Gezawa Council.

Danja, who is the current member representing Gezawa Constituency, was arrested for allegedly leading a team of political thugs to disrupt one of the collation centres in the area.

Parading the suspects, yesterday, the state Police Commissioner, Husaini Muhammad Gummel, said about 164 people were arrested for various political crimes during Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

The suspects allegedly snatched ballot boxes, disrupted election process, engaged in violence using dangerous weapons, as well as engaged in drugs related crimes.

Gummel said: “As part of our activities in ensuring peaceful conduct of the governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state, we are parading suspects arrested for various violations during the election.

“They are arrested for ballot paper snatching, disruption of voting, wielding of dangerous weapons, while some were caught with drugs.

“Among those arrested is also a member of the state Assembly, Isyaku Ali Danja, of Gezawa Constituency, who led a team of hoodlums to destroy INEC collation Centre at Gezawa. They are all going to be investigated and prosecuted accordingly.”
