The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of an American returnee, Sunday Abidoye, whose body was discovered on Wednesday in a room at Creestar Hotel, Sagamu.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta.

According to Odutola, the hotel’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), identified only as Oluwole, reported the discovery of the deceased’s body to the police.

Odutola stated that detectives visited the hotel and found Abidoye’s body already placed in a car outside the premises. She revealed that the deceased’s family was preparing to take his remains to the morgue at the time of the police’s arrival.

The deceased’s brother, Jimoh Godday, who resides in Imota, Lagos State, told police that his brother had arrived in Nigeria from the United States on Saturday.

“Jimoh said he tried calling his brother on Monday but received no response. Concerned, he visited the hotel, knocked several times on the door, and, after getting no answer, obtained a spare key from the hotel manager. Upon entering the room, he discovered his brother’s lifeless body,” Odutola said.

She added that various drugs and traditional medicines were recovered from the room, and the centre of the bed was soaked with a liquid-like substance.

Odutola also disclosed that a friend of the deceased, Ogunmonti Ogunwole, confirmed accompanying Abidoye to purchase nine different types of medication the previous day due to complaints of illness.

The body has been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue in Sagamu for an autopsy.

Odutola noted that no cause of death had been established yet and that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a comprehensive investigation.

She advised members of the public to avoid using medications without proper medical prescriptions.
