Police query operatives involved in extortion along Benin Bypass

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun

The six police officers who were seen in a viral video extorting money from motorists and road users along the Benin Bypass have been brought before the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

In the viral video, a Nigerian police officer was captured asking for either N5,000 or five litres of fuel from motorists who did not possess proof of an Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR). The ECMR is a digital vehicle registration system in Nigeria, and the officer was exploiting its absence as a pretext to demand bribes.

An X user posted it on the microblogging platform, drawing the attention of the police to it.

In a statement released by the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, it was disclosed that the IGP queried them and ordered disciplinary procedures against the erring operatives.

“Upon their arrival at the Force Headquarters, the six erring officers, including their supervising officer, a Chief Superintendent of Police, were marched in to appear before the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D, NPM, who condemned their actions as shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable,” the statement read in part.

“He further ordered the immediate commencement of disciplinary procedures against all six officers involved.”

According to Adejobi, these disciplinary measures taken against the erring operatives reveal the commitment of the Force to upholding professionalism, accountability, and integrity in all its dealings.

The spokesperson also assured Nigerians that the Force will not tolerate misconduct and will mete out appropriate sanctions to erring operatives.
