Police rescue kidnap victim, arrest two

Operatives of Anambra State Police Command have rescued a kidnap victim, Ijideofor Attama, who was abducted along Nnewi road last week.

The Guardian learnt that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N10 million from the victim’s family before he was rescued.
    
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Toochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the development, in a statement, yesterday, said two suspects have been arrested, while the victim, Attama, 32, was from Igboetiti in Enugu State.
   
Ikenga said: “Anambra State Police Command operatives, on 17/5/2022, rescued a kidnap victim, one Ijideofor Attama, aged 32, ‘M’ from Igboetiti in Enugu State.

   
“Mr Attama was abducted on 14/5/2022 at about 10:00 p.m. along Nnewi road in his Rava 4 Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), by a gang of five armed men, operating with an ash-coloured Toyota Sienna car, marked KGE 117 PZ, and whisked away to an unknown destination.
   
“The kidnap gang were in fact already asking for N10 million from the victim’s family. Fortunately, the victim escaped from where he was kept and alerted security guards in the area. Police operatives were also contacted and immediately came to his rescue.
     
“Following the successful rescue of the victim,  police operatives arrested two of the suspects, one Chukwudere Eze, aged 30, (M) of Ogbunka in Orumba South Local Council of Anambra State and Raphael Obasi, aged 40, ‘(M) of Arondizuogu in Imo State, while the operatives also recovered a brown Toyota Sienna.”

In another development, Ikenga said security operatives have repealed attacks by hoodlums,  who attacked a vigilante office in Awka, Anambra State capital on Monday.

   
Ikenga stressed that during the encounter, four vigilante operatives sustained fatal wounds, while the hoodlums fled and abandoned three of their vehicles.

He added that security operatives recovered one automatic pump action gun, thirty rounds of AK-47 live ammunition, six live cartridges and one live SMG ammunition.
    
MEANWHILE, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng, has restated the Command’s commitment to the fight against crime and criminality in the state.
 
He called for continuous support, especially through timeous information to the police and other law enforcement agencies.
