Police should not fight by day, sleep in indignity at night – IGP

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun

Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has declared an unwavering commitment to provide conducive accommodation for officers and men of the forces to enhance their morale to national duty.

IGP Egbetokum gave the assurance on Wednesday during the unveiling of over 300 newly completed housing units constructed for police officers at Bompai and Unguwar Uku police barracks in Kano.

The police boss emphasised the critical role of officers in ensuring the protection of life and property in Nigeria, reminding that “no officer should fight for a nation by day and sleep in indignity by night” under his stewardship.

Egbetokum pointed out that the idea to provide quality and conducive shelter for officers across the country is part of the cornerstone and a feasible outcome of purposeful leadership that prioritises the welfare of the police.

He asserted the resolve of police authority to eliminate obstacles hindering effective discharge of duty decisively and prioritise officers’ welfare.

He said, “With over 300 modern residential units, a 48-office administrative complex, a standard armoury, a transport workshop, power shops, worship centres, paved roads, and integrated support systems, this facility represents modern infrastructure. It embodies intentional leadership and a vision of policing grounded in human dignity.

“This project is not isolated. It’s a part of a nationwide blueprint of strategic transformation. We are building not just barracks and offices, but a new era of policing that is modern, motivated, and mission-ready.

“We are reconstructing the force from within, aligning operational excellence with emotional dignity, linking welfare to performance, and treating infrastructure not as cosmetic but as catalytic”. Egbetokum said.

The IGP reminded the beneficiaries that the modern accommodation is not a charity but a recognition of their sacrifice to national duty. He urged that the investment must reflect in the professionalism and responsiveness of their services to the communities.

“The justure is a symbol of institutional respect, treated with the same honour and discipline with which you wear the uniform. It should be daily reminded that the nation sees you, values you, and is investing in you,” he said.

Earlier, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State applauded the police authority for its dedication and commitment to sustaining peace and order in Kano.

Represented by Commissioner for Special Duties, AVM Ibrahim Umar rtd, Governor Yusuf assured unrelenting support to the police for effective protection of life and property in Kano.
