Worried by accusations of rights abuses, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) yesterday commenced a four-day human rights training for instructors from NPF training schools from the northern region.

The outcome of the forum on human rights issues would be part of the training programmes for officers and men of the Nigeria Police.

The workshop, which was declared opened by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, yesterday in Kaduna has the Prisoners Rehabilitation And Welfare Action (PRAWA) as it’s Technical/Lead Coordinator, supported by the German International Corporation (GIZ), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Swiss Embassy in Nigeria.

It is expected to look at human rights issues including access to information and accountability, speeding up criminal justice process, rights of persons under detention, prevention of torture, gender issues and use of force and firearms.
