Nigeria’s premium spirits market is experiencing a notable transformation, driven by a shift in consumer preferences towards authenticity, craftsmanship, and quality. This evolution was recently underscored by the launch of Gin Mare, a Spanish gin with deep Mediterranean roots, now available in Nigeria.

The entry of Gin Mare reflects the increasing sophistication of Nigerian consumers, particularly among the growing middle and upper classes. These consumers are demonstrating a preference for premium products with genuine heritage, a shift from previous habits that prioritised price over provenance.

Produced using Arbequina olives, rosemary, basil, and thyme from Spain’s coastal regions, Gin Mare showcases centuries-old Mediterranean distillation techniques.

These artisanal methods and unique botanicals are resonating with Nigerian consumers who are becoming more discerning and curious about the origin and production of what they consume.

Originally launched in international markets in 2007 and now part of Brown-Forman’s portfolio following a 2022 acquisition, Gin Mare is being introduced to the Nigerian market through a partnership with the Nigerian Bottling Company.

Ibiyemi Dada, Senior Brand Manager for the Brown-Forman portfolio in Nigeria, described the market’s response as a reflection of changing values. “The market’s openness to premium offerings with authentic backgrounds indicates a sophisticated consumer base that values substance,” Dada said.

Recent market research supports this view, showing growing interest in botanical and craft spirits across Nigeria. Consumers are increasingly gravitating towards products with distinctive flavour profiles and cultural significance, reflecting broader trends in the country’s luxury consumption patterns.

Oyinkansola Afolabi, Brand Manager for Gin Mare, also noted this shift. “Nigerian consumers are now asking more informed questions about production methods, sourcing, and heritage. This level of market sophistication presents opportunities for brands that can demonstrate authentic craftsmanship,” she said.

The launch event, attended by key players in Nigeria’s lifestyle and hospitality sectors, highlighted the rising influence of heritage brands. Gin Mare’s positive reception suggests a strong appetite for culturally rooted, premium spirits among Nigeria’s tastemakers and trendsetters.

Currently available in select outlets across Lagos, Gin Mare plans to expand distribution to other major cities. This reflects growing demand beyond the commercial capital and points to a broader national trend of evolving tastes in the spirits market.
