Presidency distances self from pro-Buhari group
The Presidency yesterday formally dissociated itself from the amorphous group under the name #Istandwithbuhari advocacy group, demanding that the group should immediately stop claiming any alliance with the Buhari administration.
In a strongly worded statement, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the Presidency also want the persons behind the controversial #Istandwithbuhari group to stop using the names of President Muhammadu Buhari and that of his wife, Aisha to promote themselves and their activities.
The group was reported in the media to be in a brawl recently, culminating in the alleged resignation of one of its leaders purportedly over his disagreement with alleged plans by some members of the group to organise a 30 million-man solidarity march in support of the President’s fight against corruption.
Shehu, who did not make any allusion to the purported solidarity march, noted that while the Buhari administration had recorded some modest achievements, it was not in the tradition of the President to start going public with such feats, but believed they should speak for themselves.
He said: “Among other reasons, we have found it necessary to distance the Presidency from the #Istandwithbuhari group because its premature and ostentatious celebration of the present administration’s achievements is totally inconsistent with Buhari’s philosophy of service with humility.
“While the present administration has indeed recorded significant successes in its priority areas of improving security across the nation, ending the Boko Haram insurgency, curbing official corruption and revamping Nigeria’s economy, Buhari is well aware that his government still has a lot of national challenges to overcome.
“The President prefers to give his fullest attention to addressing those challenges without the unsolicited and unwelcome distraction of untimely praise-singing from groups with dubious and questionable motives.”
