Presidential aide counters Tunde Ednut’s claims on tax reforms

The Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, has countered popular blogger Tunde Ednut’s claims on tax reforms.

The blogger alleged that Nigerians earning N800,000 yearly will be levied a 20 per cent tax on their total yearly income.

“Anyone, Nigerian or foreigner, who does business in Nigeria and earns #800,000 or more in a year will have to pay 20 per cent tax on their total yearly income, whether they live in Nigeria or not,” the blogger’s post read.

Olusegun addressed this claim on X, describing it as “misinformation being peddled by certain bloggers on social media led by Tunde Ednut”.

“It is important to restate some facts about the Tax Reform Bills whose implementation is set to take off by January 2026… For personal income, the newly proposed tax rate is a progressive system, which means higher earners will pay more taxes while low-income earners pay less or none, as the case may be,” he wrote on X.

He outlined the specific rates: a zero per cent tax on the first N800,000 of income, 15 per cent on the next N2.2 million, 18 per cent on the next N9 million, 21 per cent on the next N13 million, 23 per cent on the next N25 million, and 25 per cent on income above N50 million.

Olusegun emphasised that the new tax reforms were implemented to ensure equitable tax distribution among high and low earners.

According to him, the goal of the new tax bill is to ensure that low-income earners are adequately protected while high-income earners pay their fair share, reduce inequality, and alleviate the burden of excessive taxation.

He added that the new tax reform will eliminate multiple taxation across different levels of government for Nigerians. Describing the tax reforms as a game-changer, Olusegun noted that misinformation on the tax reforms will not be welcomed.

“The act promises to be a game-changer, and no misinformation from mob-lifters should be welcomed. We are decades behind on this journey, and no one will discourage us now, especially not fake news merchants like Tunde Ednut and his ilk,” he said.
