Comptroller General, Nigeria Prisons Service, (NPS), Mr. Peter Ezenwa Ekpendu yesterday denied having a hand in the alleged assault of House of Representatives member, Mrs. Onyemaechi Joan Mrakpor at the precinct of the National Assembly.

Ekpendu, who spoke while testifying before members of the House Committee on Interior remarked that the incident must have occurred after he has been chauffeur-driven out of the National Assembly complex on the fateful day.

He explained that there were two other vehicles-a Hilux and a 504 car that conveyed deputy comptrollers of prisons’ budget and finance and administration and their escorts that could have been involved in the brush with the lawmaker.

The prison chief, who claimed he was astonished when his attention was drawn to the ugly incident, which occurred last week at the precinct of the National Assembly complex, described the incidence as unfortunate.

Stating that he had already ordered for the conduct of a thorough investigation to unearth those who indulged in the unethical act of assaulting the lawmaker, he said: ” I do not accept any form of indiscipline, unethical and condemnable conduct. It was unfortunate that my convoy would have to be associated with this ugly incidence. I have a wife, mother and sisters. Why would I tolerate any form of assault on a woman?

“I have already issued a query to all the officers on the convoy because I felt it was imperative we carry out a thorough investigation into this matter. As at the time this incidence occurred, the pilot vehicle, my official jeep and back up jeep had passed. My vehicle did not park; I never knew what happened, I didn’t know of any incident until the following day. My deputy comptroller is in a better position to respond over what really transpired that day.”

The prison chief, who assured that anybody found guilty would be severely punished, implored members of the Jagaba Adam Jagaba-led committee to explore avenues of resolving the matter amicably since some security operatives could be overzealous while at their duty posts.

Mrakpor, who also testified during the session tacitly, exonerated the Prison chief, saying he was not at the scene when his security details assaulted her.
