Progressive governors endorse direct, indirect primaries
During a parley at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, the 22 governors of the party resolved to conduct the party’s primaries in a credible atmosphere.
APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, graced the parley held Wednesday night.
PGF chairman, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo, said: “We have adopted both direct and indirect (primaries) and most of the states are going for the latter; but for the president, it is going to be direct primary.
“We just held a meeting with the chairman and resolved that, in support of the party, we are going to have free and fair primaries. Everybody will be given equal chance to participate in the primaries which will be transparent.”
Okorocha assured that both the PGF and the APC National Working Committee (NWC) were working together to ensure victory for the party in 2019.
Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, explained that the disagreement over the choice of the mode to be used to determine candidates of the party should not be seen as a surprising development.
“There will always be some that will disagree, but the decision of the NEC is that the majority of the state executive committee (members) decided on the mode of primaries.
In the Kaduna that you mentioned, which I am the governor by the grace of God, majority of the state executive committee decided on indirect primaries. If one or two members don’t agree, that is not the decision of NEC.”
