THE National Commissioner of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in charge of Kogi, Nasarawa and Plateau states, Dr. Abdulkadir Oniyanei has challenged the National Assembly members-elect in Kogi State to reciprocate the mandate given them by the electorate through making laws that will have positive impact on the lives of the people.

Oniyanei gave the charge in Lokoja during the presentation of certificates of return to candidates of political parties that won elections into the senate and house of representative seats in the state.

According to him, the opportunity created for them by the electorate is to enable them serve the people through motions and bills that will enhance their living standard.

Warning them not to get involved in selfish acquisition of wealth that could tarnish their image, he further advised that they should see themselves as people servants and also urged them to imbibe the spirit of selfless service to their respective constituencies.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kogi State, Professor Jacob Shekwonudu Jatau said the power that has been entrusted to members – elect by the people goes with a great deal of expectations and responsibility, stressing that such expectations requires the members to make laws that would improve the living conditions of the people.

He said, “This responsibility show that you need to be reminded that there are people out there who are counting on you to move their lives forward. You cannot afford to disappoint their trust.”
Lamenting on the violence and voters apathy that characterised the elections in some areas, Jatau disclosed that some of the results were inconclusive. He called on politicians in the state to keep their supporters in check to avoid violence in future elections.

The REC commended the security agents and members of NYSC used during the elections as ad hoc staff for their selfless services rendered to the nation.
