Registration fees: BUK issues final notice to unregister students

Bayero University has partnered two Biogas companies to accelerate alternative energy solutions.

Bayero University, Kano has issued a final extension of its deadline for student registration after which the open windows will be shut for unregistered.

The University has extended the registration period of 2022/2023 academic session for the third time to enable students to meet over 100 per cent increase in registration and accommodation fees in the University.

In the statement by Deputy registrar, Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, the University Senate has reconsidered further and final extension of the deadline to end of September to accommodate quite significant percent of undergraduate students who are yet to register.

Although, Kano and Jigawa state governments as well as philanthropists and individuals in the business community have pledged to pay the bills of thousands of indigenous students especially those from their states who are unable to meet the increased levy, The Guardian learned the pledges have not been fulfilled.

For instance, the Kano state government has pledged to fund the bill of 7,000 indigenous students of the state at the sum of N700 million naira, a promise the government is about to fulfill. However, the commissioner for higher education in Kano, Dr. Yusuf Kofar Nassarawa said the government is working hard to complete the process of payment.

Similarly, the Jigawa state government announced the approval of over N167 million to settle registration fees of its indigenes in BUK and other tertiary institutions.

According to the statement, “The University management has noticed a significant number of the students are yet to register for the session. Consequently upon appeal by Governments of Kano and Jigawa states, as well as Students’ Union Government, the management at its meeting further approved the extension.

“The further extension approved for the period of registration exercise to the midnight of 30th September 2023. There will not be further extension of the registration period after this date. Any student who failed to register by deadline will not be allowed to sit for first semester examination of 2022/2023 session.”

The University has attributed high cost of utilities and other logistics cost to the increase in the registration fee.
