Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the reopening of religious centres across the state from August 7, though services are to hold with 50 per cent worship centre capacity. He added that multiple services could be held on same day.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the reopening of religious centres across the state from August 7, though services are to hold with 50 per cent worship centre capacity. He added that multiple services could be held on same day.

Sanwo-Olu, who disclosed this yesterday, at a briefing, also said attendance at public gathering could increase to 50 from 20 people. The governor further said any worship or social centre that failed to put in place appropriate COVID-19 protocol will be shut, as state officials would constantly going out to monitor the situation of things.

Sanwo-Olu, however, limited worship activities to only once in a week, Fridays for Muslims and Sundays for Christians. He said all other weekly activities should still be on hold.

He advised senior citizens to still stay at home, while religious centres should enforce no facemasks, no entry, while regular facility cleaning should be carried out, aside providing hand washing facilities.

He said hand shakes and hugs were not permitted during services, and participants should be well briefed with notices intimating worshipers of these instructions provided within worship centres.

“Having carefully reviewed the scenario in Lagos, we would be increasing the permissible capacity of public and social gathering from 20 to 50,” Sanwo-Olu said, adding that the review was based on the competing demand for safeguarding lives and enabling livelihood.

He implored residents to still be cautious, as evidences are that mass gathering can increase the spread of the disease. He also urged residents to still observe physical distancing and use facemasks, while religious and social centres should regularly disinfect their facilities.

Sanwo-Olu said restaurants would be permitted to reopen from August 14 at 50 per cent capacity for in-service, just like social clubs and recreational centres, but not yet nightclubs and cinemas.

The governor said though Lagos has been the epicentre in Nigeria, it has shown national examples in the efficacy of testing and treatment, as well as partnership with private sector and the Federal Government.
