Remarks on Obi not a threat, Okpebholo clarifies

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo

• Wike scores gov’s eight-month performance high
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, yesterday, said that he will not be distracted by criticism coming from social media, following his statement on the former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi. Okpebholo made the remarks in Benin during the official commissioning of the New Edo Line Transport Service, a state-owned transport company.

The governor noted that his remarks about Obi were not a threat, but advice meant for his good. He said: “What I said was advice to him; it was never a threat.

“Do not come to Edo without telling me. This is a clear statement. I am not only here to work for Edo people but also to protect them, as well as visitors coming to the state.

“I only told Obi to notify me as the Chief Security Officer when coming to the State. Is that a crime?” He recalled the incident that led to the death of one of his security details during the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, pointing out that the Commissioner of Police asked him to remain at the Benin Airport when he arrived, noting he was attacked at the airport, as one of his security guards was shot dead right in his presence.

“I had a security report and advised the former governor of Anambra State to inform me whenever he is coming to Edo State. If he likes, let him take my advice.” Okpebholo said.

MEANWHILE, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyson Wike, yesterday, described Okpebholo as a performer, delivering dividends of democracy to the people within only eight months in office.

Wike spoke in Benin during the official commissioning of the New Edo Line Transport Service, a state-owned transport company. Wike said: “Your performance will give you the confidence to always come home even after your tenure as governor.”

Wike also hailed the governor for his unwavering support for the President Bola Tinubu administration. Wike appreciated Edo people for the choice of Okpebholo during the September 21 Edo Governorship election, saying: “I thank God for the people of Edo State for standing firm during the election of Monday Okpebholo.

He said: “The governor refused to be distracted, and in eight months, he has done so much for Edo people. Just like what the President did immediately after he was inaugurated. He hit the ground running. That is what Okpebholo has done today by making sure there are no excuses.”
