About 20 communities in Engenni kingdom of Ahoada-West Local Council of Rivers State have barricaded the Mbiama axis of the East West road over the deplorable state of the road.

The Guardian gathered that the degeneration worsened as a result of heavy flooding last year. Speaking on the road, Paramount ruler of Mbiama community, Otovie Sylvanus, lamented that economic activities in the area were under threat.  He called on the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to come to their aid.

Also, president of Engenni Youth Assembly, Onem Okenya, threatened to continue with the protest until they get the authorities’ commitment to fix the road.

He expressed frustration over lack of supervision from Federal Government agencies after directives were given for repair of roads washed off by last year’s flooding in Niger Delta.

The protest left some commuters and motorists stranded on the road, while others expressed fear of their safety. Some extended their support to protesters, accusing government representatives from the South-South region of failing to develop their areas.

They called on government to do something urgently on the road to reduce their sufferings.
