The management of Rivers State University (RSU) has banned undergraduate students from driving personal vehicles within the campus between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
The directive came shortly after a fatal accident claimed the life of one Miss Eno Udosen, a resident of the university‘s main campus.
In a statement signed by the Acting Registrar, Dr. Idanyingi Daminabo, the university said the decision was reached at a management meeting held in response to the accident, the management further directed that only postgraduate students and those of the Centre for Continuing Education will be permitted to drive within the campus upon presentation of valid university identity cards.
Under the new directive, undergraduate students who bring personal vehicles to the university are to park them at the designated car park near the main entrance and use authorised university shuttle buses to move around the campus.
The statement, which was aired in PortHarcourt based radio station, warned that any student found driving recklessly would face disciplinary measures, including suspension, while the vehicle involved would be impounded.
The university also announced that visiting hours at students’ hostels will now end at 6:00 p.m. daily for security reasons.
In addition, management approved a maximum speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour on major campus roads and 20 kilometres per hour in residential areas.
The statement added that two students allegedly involved in the fatal accident have been arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
