The Rivers State University (RSU) has said that Nigeria needs impactful leaders to accelerate development.
This is as the institution celebrated the contributions of the first African Professor of Geodesy, Emeritus Professor Dagogo Fubara, towards improving the Niger Delta region and building the nation.
The academic community said that life impacts are not measured by wealth and properties, but the commitments of individuals towards raising the next generations, which Fubara depicted.
The Vice Chancellor of RSU, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, noted that the emeritus professor played a vital role in addressing environmental challenges, advocating for sustainable development in the region.
Zeb-Obipi noted this at a Book Presentation in commemoration of Fubara’s 87th Birthday and his 60th wedding anniversary at the Institution on Friday.
He also noted that Fubara was instrumental to the development of Nigeria’s geodetic infrastructure, including surveying the routes for the trans-Niger crude oil pipelines, which is one of the nation’s largest economic assets, and impacted the young generation.
It was also noted that Fubara, who was instrumental to the establishment of the Rivers State University, also worked as Special Adviser to then Governor of old Rivers State, late Melford Okilo, pushing for the creation and dredging of many creeks and canals aimed at addressing flooding, sea hyacinth and environmental problems of the people at the time.
The Vice Chancellor said, “The legacy of Prof. Fubara is a testament to the power of dedication and resilience. The book titled, ‘Dagogo Michael Jim Fubara: Life of Divine Providence’ serves as an inspiration to all who aspire to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.”
